the power of ten

October 23rd, 2009 by

Ten years ago today Rob and I married.

It’s funny writing that because it doesn’t really begin to tell the story.  The mileage matters less than the experience of shared journeying.  Or said another way, the best roadtrips aren’t just about where you went and what you saw.  They’re really about who you were with.

During our engagement, Rob was introduced to a great friend of my mother’s over a lunch.  After the meal, mom’s friend, a wonderful gentleman with impeccable manners and a refined southern accent, turned to me and said, “Oh Ashley, Rob is fabulous.  He’s someone you could drive to El Paso with.”  Apparently this is a real compliment.  And though I’ve never driven through Texas with Rob, I smile imagining that adventure.  I’m even tempted to use the magic word “yet”, as in “…never driven through Texas with Rob yet.”

So Happy Anniversary, Robert Paul.

It had to be you, wonderful you, it had to be you.

What a fabulous story! I just love how your mother’s friend put it – so perfect and eloquent! I think driving to El Paso might need to be on the agenda now… given your anniversary present!
