here’s to pony rides

Last night was another great one in the theatre. Rob and I checked out Lyle Lovett at Wilmington’s Grand Opera House. Again, I was blown away to be in the presence of another masterful musician. A cowboy shaman. Go figure.
Remember when Julia Roberts was dating him and the press were having a field day spewing out all kinds of mean headlines like “Beauty and the Beast”. Well I remember thinking how great it was. Not that I knew either of them. Still, I just sensed something soulful and deep there. Maybe I’m wrong but have you listened to some of the songs he wrote while they were dating/married? Check out: Just the Morning. I don’t even know that he definitely wrote that for her, but it feels good believing he did.
And can I just say that three quarters of the way through the show, when he played If I Had a Boat, the whole theatre sang along to those lines that make no logical sense – except to the soul.
If I had a boat, I’d go out on the ocean. And if I had a pony, I’d ride him on my boat…
If that kind of adventure isn’t possible in childhood and then somehow lost on us as adults, I don’t know what is. But I know this, riding ponies makes this kid smile on land or sea.
