At afternoon pick-up a few weeks ago at our son, Gates’, school, his teacher came out to the car to share some great news: this was the most focused week Gates has had. Needless to say, his Dad and I were thrilled. When I congratulated Gates, he beamed a big smile and gave that “inner nod” the one that’s as much to ourselves as to the person we’re speaking with. I asked how it felt, and he replied, “changeful.”

Now I have a new favorite word.

Changeful has a magical ring to it suggesting a kind of alchemical wizardry. It pulses with the miraculous. I dig it. And I wonder am I inviting “changeful” experiences into my life? We often know what we need to fix, heal, change, or work on and yet we often don’t do those things. We deny the “changeful”. We deny our growth. The funny thing is we have the power, what spiritual teacher Marianne Williamson refers to as “the magic wand of focused consciousness”. At the end of the day, who we are is up to us – not our parents, friends, church, doctor, teachers or anyone else. What we think about, we bring about. Ask yourself: what am I focusing on in this moment and am I allowing a “changeful” experience? I am looking forward to saying Yes and rocking that “inner nod”. Join me, okay? It’s cliche and totally true as we change ourselves we change our world.
