Now Fear This

June 8th, 2015 by

Carowinds, a North Carolina amusement park, is adding a new attraction this spring.  It’s called Fury 325 and is built to simulate a hornet’s flight.  The track comprises of more than 6,000 feet with a lift of 325 feet and an 81 degree descent.  Less than four minutes long, the ride’s maximum speed is 95 mph.

3 words: No Thank You.

And yes, there are lots of other 3 word combos that could be easily substituted, but what really gets me is that people will stand in line and pay someone to scare the crap out of them.

Let’s pause and consider that for a moment.

What is it that we are drawn to when it comes to fear and being scared?  I didn’t get the gene that experiences rollercoasters as thrilling, but, if I’m honest, I ride them all the time.

All. The. Time.

But not where anyone else can see me white-knuckling and shrieking.  I pay with my thoughts and the ride is called: The Future.  I may not have a lot of talents but I am a rock star when it comes to scaring myself witless.    I can’t tell you how many times I’ve died, severed limbs, crashed cars, buried my kids, starved, frozen to death you name it.  I’ve ridden it.

What exactly was the payoff?

I think I thought if I got there first it wouldn’t hurt as much because I’d already known this would happen.  What an idiot.  Knowing something in our mind and experiencing it with our being are two very, VERY different things.

Alan Watts is right.  We don’t get wet from the word water.

I’m reminded of a documentary filmmaker, Velcrow Ripper, who told me once that the way he sees it we can either embody the journey of our mind or embody the journey of our soul.

I’d embodied my mind for a long time, now more of my days are spent embodying my soul.  It is the sweeter ride.  It’s full of “F”words, too.  But instead of fearful and frightening, it’s fabulous, fun and free.  I’m lighter and less attached.  There’s more “weeeeeee” than “whoa”/woe.

The amusement park of life is full of rides.  Get on the one that makes you grin.  And if it’s the Fury 325, buckle up.  I’ll give you the thumbs-up for your crazy way and then I’ll be over on the wave swinger surfing my soul.
